Description

WHY WE NEED HOUSESITTERS
I love to travel. The only drawback is leaving my much-loved (and admittedly a bit spoiled) two Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers (Tollers) at home. Having now met more than a few exceptional pet sitters who have cared for them, I can better enjoy myself when I wander the world. Throughout, I have found communication is key.

My preference is for a couple to sit for my fur-kids. Walks are easier and more enjoyable when it’s one-person-one-dog.

MY DOGS
Tollers are extremely good natured. In fact, both of mine are “office greeters” on a regular basis. They love people. Cooper is just under 50 lbs; Penny is around 40 lbs. They are great watch dogs, always alert to visitors – human or otherwise – in the yard.

Cooper (11-yrs-old) loves playing ball but otherwise is generally Mr. Mellow. Penny (8), however, is reactive. She is more likely to hunt through the bushes and generally romp but isn’t a big ball player. Warm and loving when off-leash, when on-leash she needs a steady hand. If she sees another dog (or another trigger such as a jogger or car zipping by), she may bark and lunge with excitement. We’re working on behavior modification and, while we’ve been somewhat successful, we still have a way to go.

Cooper takes a few supplements as well as a thyroid pill morning and evening, all mixed in his food, no difficult “pilling” required. Penny, to date, has been the picture of health.

I ask that sitters sleep in the primary bedroom (a king bed) on the first floor. Expect one or both dogs to sleep with you. It is, after all, their bed, too.

THE PROPERTY
I do not allow the dogs in the yard unattended. Though the dogs don’t know it, it could potentially be jumped (either by dogs headed out or by local coyote into the yard – though thankfully never to date in either direction).

The house is spacious. You’ll find the kitchen quite well equipped and a gas grill on the deck. In addition to the main bedroom, there is a second small bedroom and 2-1/2 baths on the first floor. Amenities include central air, hardwood floors, smart TVs, high speed internet and a land line for convenience for US calls in the “lower 48.” There’s also a separate laundry room.

From the house, there are several +/-mile long loops to walk through quiet neighborhoods. Another favorite place to walk are the wooded paths at a conservation area just a short drive down the street (we rarely see other people or dogs there).

OUR LOCATION
We are based in Cape Cod in Massachusetts USA. The Cape has numerous conservation areas, including much of the National Seashore, that allow dogs on leash. When the weather is cool enough, the dogs are happy in the car. They are content to ride along as you adventure around the Cape and to stop for a nice walk here or there.

There are several beautiful bay beaches from a little over a mile to several miles away. Low tide is an especially nice time to walk the beach (note: dogs are allowed on beaches only on leash and off-season). It’s an easy walk into town, to the library, shops, the market, and restaurants. If sitters require transportation, my Rav4 is available.
